Many people think of senior citizens as being complacent or inactive, but the truth is more adults are exercising well into their 60s, 70s, and 80s. These exercises are often not intense, since many older adults may not be able to do the same exercises as someone younger. However, even simple exercises such as walking or riding a bicycle can make all the difference on someone’s long-term physical or mental health. No matter your age, anyone can benefit from exercise, and it is never too late to get fit.

Here are 5 Simple “Get Fit” Tips for seniors:

  1. Consult your doctor. Your doctor knows your complete medical history, and can offer advice on exercises are best, and what exercises you should avoid.
  2. Pick an exercise that you like. At any age, exercise can be a daunting task we try to avoid. However, an activity that you enjoy doing can make a huge difference in your routine. If you choose an exercise you enjoy, you will be far more motivated to go out and do it!
  3. Take it easy. Older athletes who are just beginning to exercise regularly should not start off doing an exercise such as high-impact cardio. Senior citizens are advised to start with low-impact exercises, such as walking, swimming, or using light hand weights to help build up strength and stamina. It is also important to warm up and cool down before and after exercise.
  4. Drink plenty of fluids. Regardless of age, heat exhaustion is always a major concern during exercise and older athletes are at an even higher risk. Even if you’re not feeling thirsty, make sure you’re drinking enough fluids.  Exercise causes perspiration, and causes you to lose essential electrolytes, which are replenished by fluids such as water or sports drinks.
  5. Listen to your body. Many people who do not listen to their body place themselves at greater risk for injury. If you feel any pain or discomfort while exercising, immediately stop what you’re doing and take a break.
