Each day, we rely on our knees for basic activities, like walking. Constant use of knees mean they are always at risk for injury and pain. Knee injuries are quite common, and can occur at any age.

Perhaps the most common knee injury is an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. This common knee injury usually occurs as a result of sports injury. It is especially common among athletes who play football, soccer, or basketball. ACL tears often occur when an athlete changes direction too rapidly, or even jumping the wrong way, can cause injury to the ACL. The most common symptoms of ACL injuries include pain, swelling, and instability.

In addition to ACL injuries, other common knee injuries include meniscal tears, tendon tears, posterior cruciate ligament injuries, and dislocations or fractures. Like ACL tears, meniscal tears are often linked to sports injury, although they also occur as a result of aging or arthritis. Injuries to the posterior cruciate ligaments are usually due to a sudden blow to the front of the knee, usually as a result of a motor vehicle accident or sports-related contact. Tendon tears are usually caused by a direct fall on the knee, while knee fractures or dislocations are usually caused by severe trauma to the knees.

Some knee injuries can be alleviated simply by resting or applying ice to the knee. Other nonsurgical treatments will include physical therapy to restore function and health to the knee, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines, such as aspiring and ibuprofen to reduce pain or swelling. For patients with more severe knee injuries, more drastic treatment may be required.

Knee arthroscopy is a minimally-invasive surgery that will allow a doctor to throughly examine tissues located within the knee. this will make diagnosing a condition much easier. Because it is minimally-invasive, there is less risk for scarring or bleeding, and requires only small incisions. However, for other patients, open surgery may be the best treatment option.
